David Pittle, Ph.D.

Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety (ANSI) and Consumer Product Safety Certification Services
R. David Pittle has dedicated his career to advancing the consumer interest, with special emphasis on product safety. In 1973, President Richard Nixon appointed David to be one of the original five commissioners of the U.S. CPSC. He was reappointed by President Jimmy Carter in 1977. During his nine-year tenure, David focused attention on reducing risks associated with chain saws, lawn mowers, electric hairdryers, CB antennas, flammable fabrics, toys, upholstered furniture, and toxic chemicals. From 1982-2005, he served at Consumer Reports as Technical Director and as Senior Vice-President. He supervised the nation's preeminent product-testing laboratory, with 50 labs and a 327-acre auto test facility and track. During the 35 years prior to his retirement in 2005, business groups, academic institutions, grassroots organizations, and government agencies frequently invited him to speak on issues ranging from safer product design to chronic hazards in consumer products to effective safety regulation. David currently serves on the governing boards of ANSI, Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, and Consumer Product Safety Certification Services. In addition, he serves on the Executive Committee of ASTM’s F-15 Committee on Consumer Products, and UL’s Consumer Advisory Council where he received its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014.
