In a global environment for resolving disputes, visual communication crosses the barriers of technical expertise, language, and culture to achieve a united consensus. Using real time psychological testing on the audience, live demonstrations of data capture laser scanning technology, virtual reality (VR) applications, drone technology, and case specific examples of engineering visualization used in accident investigations, the panelists will provide an interactive multimedia presentation illustrating the effectiveness of scientific and engineering graphics in conveying complex concepts to fact finders and will provide a behind-the-scenes glimpse at emerging demonstrative techniques.

The presentation is an interactive demonstration of best practices for using demonstrative tools and aids in technically oriented design of consumer products, independent safety research, government approved recalls, and safety standard development to give real world practical advice to attendees. Following the interactive demonstration, the moderator and panelists from industry, legal and regulated community compliance will provide comments and information regarding the practical use of this technology in real life situations, to understand accident mechanisms, to safely explore alternative product design and to investigate possible alternate incident scenarios and will further engage the audience for input and discussion of this topic.

The audience will be guided through cases involving a variety of accidents with consumer products, showing how innovative scientific approaches help investigators understand and reconstruct unwitnessed accidents, engaging the audience with visual depictions and real case specific examples. The audience will witness a virtual tour of an accident scene using the latest in Virtual Reality and hear about how this breakthrough technology is changing how investigators interact with 3D data. The audience will connect with how visualization tools provide insight into the details of emerging consumer product safety issues. Demonstrations will show how 3D laser scanned data can be combined with 3D animated surrogates to capture meaningful, detailed input to help investigators and stakeholders determine the root cause of an accident.

This audience involved presentation is a real-time, dynamic demonstration that combines new technological advancements in data capture with utilization of laser scanning and drone technology, illustrates how 3D visualization tools are a natural platform for data convergence, and provides guidelines for creating effective groundbreaking visual teaching tools for stakeholders that can be applied to various consumer products. Multiple consumer product safety stakeholder perspectives will be discussed, including independent mechanical engineering safety consultant, in-house manufacturer product safety engineer, plaintiff’s counsel, and defense counsel.
