Plenary #02: E-commerce and the Rise of Counterfeits: Ensuring the Safety of Products Sold Online

Global ecommerce sales have surpassed the trillion-dollar mark, and it has allowed products to reach consumers’ hands faster than ever. Direct-to-consumer sales via e-commerce platforms allow consumers to buy products from anywhere in the world and have it delivered directly to their homes. There are immense benefits of e-commerce, but also challenges.

Although product safety requirements apply to products regardless of whether they are sold online or via brick-and-mortar stores, products sold online may be harder to track, monitor and verify, and non-compliant products may more easily reach consumer’s hand. In addition, there is a growing trend of counterfeited product being sold online: the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) found that 40% of items purchased from third-party sellers on five popular e-commerce sites (ranging from cosmetics to sneakers to electronics) ended up being counterfeit.

Most counterfeit products are poor-quality and can cause serious injuries. This panel discussion will engage e-commerce platforms, brick and mortar retailers, governments, consumer groups and the Testing, Inspection and Certification (TIC) industry to discuss best practices and recommendations for addressing the challenges caused by counterfeit and unsafe consumer products sold online.
