Historically, protecting the consumer from harmful consumer products has been focused on the potential for physical harm. But as the Internet of Things (IoT) has taken the industry by storm, protecting the privacy of the consumer has become a paramount consideration in product safety. Not surprisingly, an industry long accustomed to tangible, testable safety standards has often struggled to adapt to new considerations, including less familiar regulators and enforcement bodies, fledgling and subjective development standards, overbroad legislation, and quickly evolving technology that is often well outside the manufacturer’s expertise.

This panel will explore how companies can—and must—adapt to meet the challenges inherent at the intersection of product safety and product security to protect consumers from risks in interconnected products.
